Removing caps on the National Health Insurance Fund was a crucial step toward sustainable financing for universal health coverage. Now we must continue strengthening primary health care and ensuring that NCD and mental health services are fully integrated and accessible to all.
During the 2024 elections onwards, the NCD Alliance and its network of people living with NCDs called on political parties to commit to integrate comprehensive NCD and mental health services into the National Health Insurance Scheme, mobilize domestic resources through health taxes and other sustainable funding mechanisms to attain UHC, invest and improve PHC facilities, and meaningfully involve people with lived experience.
A key ask was to exempt the National Health Insurance Fund from the list of statutory funds that are capped, a decision taken by the government this year and a key advcoacy win for the Alliance, alongside the launch of Ghana Medical Trust Fund and the roll-out of the Free Primary Health Care initiative.
