Universal Health Coverage will remain a pipe dream unless women’s health is placed at the center of primary health care—with bold policy reform, modernized training, service delivery models with serious investment in the health workforce. Country and innovative financing that follows need, real-time data systems, culturally rooted community engagement, and partnerships that drive advocacy and accountability.
This is what is transformative, and anything less is delay.
Professor Anne Beatrice Kihara is the immediate past President of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO). She is committed to advancing global women's health through advocacy, innovation, and collaboration. With over two decades of experience in obstetrics, gynecology, and public health, her work spans clinical care, education, research, and policy development.
Professor Kihara has previously served as President of the African Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (AFOG) (2021–2023) and the Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society (KOGS) (2013–2017), where she led impactful initiatives such as the Beyond Zero Campaign to improve maternal and reproductive healthcare across Kenya and Africa. She has also contributed globally through my work on the FIGO Pregnancy and Non-Communicable Diseases Committee (2017–2021) and through technical assistance in shaping policies, guidelines, and bills on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
